What Is lipoma?

Lipoma is a slow-growing, soft, fatty lump that forms beneath the skin. It’s non-cancerous and generally harmless, but it can become uncomfortable or bothersome—especially if it grows larger or appears in a visible area.

While lipoma doesn’t usually cause pain, it can press on nerves or develop in sensitive areas, leading some people to seek removal for relief or cosmetic reasons.

Common Characteristics of Lipoma

  • Soft, doughy texture and easily movable under the skin
  • Typically painless (but can become tender or sore)
  • Most often found on the shoulders, back, arms, thighs, or neck
  • Ranges in size from a small pea to several inches across

What to Expect

from Your Consultation

At Solomon Cosmetic Center, your consultation includes:

Dr. Solomon will examine the lump’s size, shape, location, and mobility to determine if it appears to be a lipoma.
Depending on your case, we may recommend imaging such as an ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, or X-ray to confirm the diagnosis and rule out anything deeper or more complex.

If there are any unusual signs, a biopsy may be performed to rule out liposarcoma, a rare malignant tumor.

If the lump is confirmed to be a lipoma—and it’s painful, growing, or cosmetically concerning—Dr. Solomon will recommend surgical removal and explain the procedure, risks, and expected outcomes.

Lipoma Removal Surgery:

A Detailed Guide

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is used to numb the area surrounding the lipoma, ensuring a pain-free procedure. This method is preferred for small or superficial growths. The local anesthetic is injected into the skin with immediate effects. Dr. Solomon may also use general anesthesia in some cases if needed.
Direct excision is the most common technique for lipoma removal. A tiny incision is made over the growth, and the fatty tissue is carefully separated from surrounding structures. This approach is ideal for smaller, well-defined lipomas that are not deeply embedded.
VASER liposuction may be employed for larger growths or those in sensitive areas. This technique uses ultrasound technology to break down fatty tissue, making it easier to remove through a thin cannula. VASER liposuction minimizes scarring and is often chosen when multiple or large lipomas are present
In cases where the growth is exceptionally large or in an area prone to fluid buildup, a surgical drain may be placed to prevent post-procedure swelling. This device is removed after fluid accumulation has ended.
The incision is meticulously closed to promote healing and reduce scarring. Depending on its size, dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures may be used.

Recovery & aftercare

Most patients heal within 2–4 weeks, depending on the size and location of the lipoma. Mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal during the first few days.
Discomfort is usually mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Applying ice packs can also help reduce swelling.
To prevent infection and support healing, keep the incision site clean and dry. Follow Dr. Solomon’s specific post-op care instructions closely, and avoid soaking the area until fully healed.
You can resume light activities after just a few days, but it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks—or as advised during your follow-up.
A small scar may remain where the lipoma was removed, but it will gradually fade. Most patients regain full mobility and return to normal routines within a month.
