At Solomon Cosmetic Center in the Tampa Bay area, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of our most requested procedures. Also known as an eye lift, a blepharoplasty is a surgical rejuvenation of the eyelid area, including both procedures involving the upper and lower lids. With time and aging, excess fat can gather in the upper and lower lids, causing the common problems of droopy lids, sagging eyebrows, and bags underneath the eyes.
This surgery is a corrective procedure and can remove these excess fatty deposits as well as any excess skin and wrinkles. Not only can an eye lift improve confidence in one’s appearance, removal of excess skin and fat can also improve vision.
About the Procedure
First, the patient is sedated. Incisions are made based upon the specific surgery plan. For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made within the natural crease of the lid in order to mask scarring. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made below the lower lash line. Sometimes a transconjunctival incision is used on lower eyelid surgery, which is made within the lower eyelid itself. Incisions are closed by means of sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape.
Aftercare and Recovery
After an eye lift is performed, gauze dressing and cold compresses may be utilized. You may experience some swelling, bruising, or irritation, but this can be minimized with cool compresses. It is important to use sunglasses in the healing process when exposed to the sun. Sutures used may be either absorbable or may require removal at a later date. The recovery period lasts a few weeks.
Results appear gradually with the resolution of swelling and bruising. A typical result is a more rested and youthful appearance following an eye lift procedure. The skin may appear smoother and rejuvenated. Final results typically appear within several weeks, and the outcome is long-term. Full fading of scars should take 6 months or longer. Long-lasting, natural aging will still occur, and it is prudent to take care to protect the skin around the eyes through the use of sunscreen and sunglasses.
