Why is Gynecomastia more prevalent today?
Dr. Solomon discusses what is causing the rise in rates of Gynecomastia, or male boobs. This was once seen in older males, but has now become more widespread among adolescents.
“Gynecomastia, or male boobs, why is it that we are seeing much more or that nowadays? And sometimes we’re also seeing it a lot in adolescents. Well, in adolescents it’s normal to have a little bit of growth of the breast tissue and pointy breasts, and that’s because of the hormonal changes, because when they are in the adolescence, the testosterone level has not reached a maximum level in their system, and they still have some estrogen, and therefore they still have a little bit of some breast tissue. However once you pass that stage of adolescence and now you become a fully grown man and you should not have any or much of a breast tissue, your breasts should be flat.
However, nowadays with obesity in our country, you see a lot of the kids either overweight or morbidly obese. As a result, the fat itself secretes estrogen. The estrogen stimulates the breast tissue, and causes the overgrowth of the breast tissue, and now they have what we call male boobs, or male breasts.
We used to see it in older males who are in the late maybe 50s or 60s or 70s, because most men, they drop their testosterone level by 2% every year after age 30, so you lose 60% of your testosterone level by age 60. As a result, when your testosterone level drops, then the estrogen level climbs, and that’s why you see most older men have a less than firm breast, droopy breast, and also sometimes enlarged breasts.
But, nowadays we’re seeing this even in younger people, and the reason we’re seeing this in younger people in their teens and their 20s and 30s, is because of the large percentage of people who are obese. ”
