What Is Sclerotherapy?
If you are interested in diminishing unsightly spider veins from your legs contact the Solomon Cosmetic Center Tampa office about sclerotherapy. With Florida’s sunny beach weather, many people living near Tampa choose to have sclerotherapy in order to improve the appearance of their legs and increase their ability to enjoy activities.
In this type of procedure, a solution is injected into a vein which causes scarring in the interior walls of the vein. This scarring leads the vein to collapse and close off, forcing the blood to flow through surrounding veins. The treated vein reabsorbs into other tissue and begins to fade in color within a few weeks. Length of time varies from person to person. Many patients require multiple injections to achieve clearer skin.
Who is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy Procedure?
The best candidates for this procedure are between 30 and 60 years of age, in good health, with a desire to improve the appearance of spider veins on their legs, thighs, face or other area of the body. If you have a health problem, blood clots or problems with allergic reactions, Dr. Solomon will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure on an individual basis. If you are pregnant, you should not have these procedures until after delivery. Patients should avoid taking over-the-counter pain medications like aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen for at least 72 hours before the procedure.
How is Sclerotherapy Performed?
Done as an outpatient procedure, you will remain on your back with legs slightly elevated throughout the procedure. Your vein area is then cleansed with alcohol to remove surface bacteria. Dr. Solomon then inserts a thin needle into the dark vein area and slowly infuses a sterile solution into it. If your vein is somewhat larger in size, Dr. Solomon may use a foam-type solution, which covers more area. He must then compress and massage your vein to disperse the solution and inhibit bleeding into your vein. Dr. Solomon then repeats this process with your other veins, if necessary. During the procedure you may feel some stinging or burning when the solution is injected.
Recovery From Sclerotherapy
After the procedure, you are encouraged to walk and move around to prevent blood clots. You should have someone drive you home after the procedure. However, you can resume normal activities immediately. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for about two weeks to allow healing. You are advised to avoid sun exposure on the treated area for a few weeks to avoid discoloration from the solution used in the veins.
