Facelifts can reverse the effects gravity has on the face and make you look younger and fresher. As we age, we experience the effects of gravity and age-related changes. Stress, wear and tear, and lifestyle factors also contribute to the unwanted changes in our faces such as deep creases, lines, wrinkles, folds and fat deposits. Men and women in their 40s and older commonly decide to “turn back the clock” by having a face lift.
A facelift involves removing excess fat and skin from the face, tightening relaxed muscles, and re-draping the skin over the face and neck. A facelift can be done on its own or along with other facial procedures such as a browlift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), or a neck lift for full facial rejuvenation. The results give you a more youthful appearance, with smoother, tighter skin, while removing the unwanted lines, wrinkles, and folds!
If you are dissatisfied with the visible signs of aging in your face and neck, then you are a candidate for a facelift. Facelifts can make you look younger by correcting signs of aging such as deep creases around the mouth or eyelids, loose skin or excess fat creating a double chin, loss of muscle causing jowls, or sagging cheeks.
About the Procedure
Your facelift will be performed by making small incisions hidden behind the ears and then lifting and tightening the deeper layers of the face by manipulating the skin. Any excess skin is either removed or re-positioned.
Aftercare and Recovery
Because a full facelift is considered an outpatient procedure, patients can begin the recovery process in the comfort of their own home the same day as surgery. After the procedure, a loose-fitting dressing is applied. Typically, there is little to no discomfort after surgery; however, if pain is present it can easily be controlled with over-the-counter medication. Discoloration and bruising is a normal part of the recovery process and generally fades within seven days. To help the recovery process, Dr. Solomon suggests that patients do the following
- Keep the head elevated as much as possible
- Avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories
- Avoid strenuous activities for 2 to 3 weeks
- Be gentle with facial and hair care due to tenderness
- Camouflage makeup can be worn to cover bruising
- Keep scheduled follow-up appointments after surgery
Mini Face Lift
Many times during a facelift consultation, Dr. Solomon will tell the patient that he/she doesn’t really need a full face lift. Instead, he will recommend a mini face lift. A good candidate for a mini facelift is someone between 40 and 55 with early signs of aging. The benefits of a mini facelift are a quicker recovery time and about half the cost of a full facelift. The mini facelift concentrates on the lower third of the face and includes the neck and jowls. Learn more+
